Sulphadiazine

Indication : Why is this medication prescribed?

Infections caused by Strepto. pyogenes, Haemophilus influenzae, H.ducreyi, Calymmatobacterium granulomatis, Vibrio cholerae. Only a few Staph. aureus, gonococci, meningococci, pneumococci, Escherichia coli and shiegella. Chlamydiae. Actinomyces, Nocardia and Toxoplasma.

Contraindication: What are the special precautions to be followed?

Under following conditions, use of this medication is inadvisable. Its use should be withhold as it would cause harm to the patient
Hypersensitivity. Folate deficiency or hyperkalaemia. G6PD deficiency.

Other Precaution to be observed while taking this medication

Pregnancy and lactation. Renal impairment.

What are possible side effects of this medication ?

Crystalluria. Anaphylactic reactions.
