Erythropoietin (Recombinant Human Erythropoietin)
Indication : Why is this medication prescribed?
Increase yield of autologous blood. Anaemia of chronic renal failure. Anaemia in zidovudine-treated HIV infected patients. Anaemia related to non-myeloid malignant disease chemotherapy.
Contraindication: What are the special precautions to be followed?
Under following conditions, use of this medication is inadvisable. Its use should be withhold as it would cause harm to the patient
Uncontrolled hypertension, hypersensitivity to mammalian cell products and human albumin.Other Precaution to be observed while taking this medication
Chronic renal failure, ischaemic heart diseases, hypertension, pregnancy, seizures, liver dysfunction, lactation.
What are possible side effects of this medication ?
Hypertension, myalgia, arthralgia, flu like syndrome, rashes and urticaria. Hypertensive crisis with encephalopathy-like symptoms e.g. headache, confusion, generalised seizures. Thrombosis. Arrhythmia, cardiac arrest, conjustive heart failure and precipitation of myocardial infarction.
