Clofazimine

Indication : Why is this medication prescribed?

Used in combination with rifampicin and dapsone as multidrug therapy in leprosy. In combination it has also been employed in the management of Mycobacterium avium infection in AIDS patients and mycobacterium avium paratubercular infection in Crohns disease patients. It has also been effective in controlling lepra reaction and erythema nodosum leprosum.

Contraindication: What are the special precautions to be followed?

Under following conditions, use of this medication is inadvisable. Its use should be withhold as it would cause harm to the patient
?First trimester of pregnancy and children.

Other Precaution to be observed while taking this medication

Renal or hepatic disorders.

What are possible side effects of this medication ?

GI Irritation and eosinophilic enteritis. Discolouration of skin when exposed to sun. Ecthyosis. Immunosuppression.
