JAN AUSHADHI SCHEME : Brief Introduction

Even today, a large number of Indian population still has to buy costlier, branded medicines. Generic medicines are an affordable and cost affective alternative to the branded medicines. Low-priced generic medicines are tested as per the Indian pharmacopoeial guidelines.

The access to low-priced generic drugs is very critical in ensuring health care at affordable prices. Ensuring availability of quality medicines at affordable prices to all has been the key objective of the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Government of India. The JAN AUSHADHI SCHEME, launched in 2008, envisages key initiative of opening of dedicated outlets i.e. 'Jan Aushadhi Stores' where high quality generic medicines would be sold at low prices. Such medicines would be equivalent in potency and efficacy to expensive branded drugs.

"In nutshell, quality and performance wise, the variation between established drug brand names and generics is about the same as the variation between the much saught after brands. "There will always be a slight, but not medically important, level of natural variability - just as there is for one batch of brand name drug compared to the next batch of brand name product"

There is dire necessity of propagating advocacy and awareness program about the lower priced generic medicines- their quality and therapeutic equivalence to branded medicines, to instill confidence in the minds of patients and physicians about the quality and efficacy of such drugs and also to propagate that patient ask their doctors to prescribe generic medicines

Mission Objective...

"Making quality medicines available at affordable prices for all, particularly the poor and disadvantaged through exclusive outlets of Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendra so as to reduce and redefine the unit cost of treatment per person."
