Thiopentone Sodium

Indication : Why is this medication prescribed?

Induction of anesthesia. Anaesthesia of short duration. Status epilepticus.

Contraindication: What are the special precautions to be followed?

Under following conditions, use of this medication is inadvisable. Its use should be withhold as it would cause harm to the patient
Hypersensitivity. Porphyria. Respiratory depression.

Other Precaution to be observed while taking this medication

Hypovolaemia, history of severe asthma, severe cardiac disease, severe anaemia, hyperkalaemia, toxaemia, myasthenia gravis, myxoedema, severe renal or hepatic disease, muscular dystrophies, adrenocortical insufficiency, increased intracranial pressure. Elderly, pregnancy and lactation.

What are possible side effects of this medication ?

Coughing, hiccupping, sneezing, muscle twitching, laryngospasm, bronchospasm. Respiratory depression, arrhythmias, circulatory failure and anaphylcatoid reactions.
