Indication : Why is this medication prescribed?

Induction of labour. Uterine inertia. Postpartum haemorrhage. Cesarean section. Breast engorgement, facilitate lactation.

Contraindication: What are the special precautions to be followed?

Under following conditions, use of this medication is inadvisable. Its use should be withhold as it would cause harm to the patient
Cephalopelvic disporportion, abnormal presentation of the foetus, hydraminios, multiparae, previous caesarian section or other uterine surgery, uterine rupture. Foetal distress where delivery is not imminent, severe pre-eclamptic toxaemia.

Other Precaution to be observed while taking this medication

CV disorders above thirty five years, lactation. Monitor foetal and maternal heart rate, maternal BP and uterine motility.

What are possible side effects of this medication ?

Foetus or neonates. Jaundice, arrhythmias bradycardia, brain, CNS damage, seizure, retinal haemorrhage. Mother transient hypotension, reflex tachycardia, rhinorrhoea, uterine bleeding, violent contractions, hypertonicity, spasm, nausea, vomiting. Maternal water intoxication, prolonged, causing foetal hypoxia and death, rupture of gravid uterus, afibrinogenaemia.
