Indication : Why is this medication prescribed?

Repigmentation of vitiliginous areas.

Contraindication: What are the special precautions to be followed?

Under following conditions, use of this medication is inadvisable. Its use should be withhold as it would cause harm to the patient
Porphyria, aphakia, melanoma or a history of melanoma, invasive squamous cell carcinoma. PUVA therapy in children.

Other Precaution to be observed while taking this medication

Certain photosensitivity disorders. Hepatic impairment. Do not sunbathe for 24 hr before and 48 hr after PUVA treatment. Avoid exposure to sunlight for at least 8 hr after admin and patient should wear wrap-around UVA absorbing glasses for 24 hr after admin. Psoriasis. Cataracts. Premalignant or malignant skin lesions. Pregnancy and lactation.

What are possible side effects of this medication ?

Increased risk of cataracts. Nausea, insomnia, depression, nervousness, dizziness, headache, vesiculation, bulla formation, acneiform eruption. Hypersensitivity. Increased risk of skin cancers e.g. squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma.
