Measles Vaccine

Indication : Why is this medication prescribed?

Active immunization of children and susceptible adults against measles virus. The measles vaccination usually given after the age of nine months, preferably between 12-15 months. To ensure optimum population of immunization it is being advocated now that the second dose of measles vaccines may be given at the school entry (between 4-6 years). Vaccination of susceptible adults within 72 hours of exposure to active case of measles.

Contraindication: What are the special precautions to be followed?

Under following conditions, use of this medication is inadvisable. Its use should be withhold as it would cause harm to the patient
Hypersensitivity, pregnancy primary or secondary immune deficiencies.

Other Precaution to be observed while taking this medication

It is for subcutaneous use only. History of convulsions. In subjects who have received human gammaglobulins or a blood transfusion, vaccination should be delayed for at least three months.

What are possible side effects of this medication ?

Mild fever or rashes, rarely febrile convulsions.
