Lignocaine

Indication : Why is this medication prescribed?

Ventricular arrythmias. Sympathetic nerve block. Percutaneous infiltration anaesthesia. Peripheral nerve block. Perianal plain and itching. Haemorrhoids. Surface anaesthesia. Epidural and spinal anaesthesia. Pupil dilation during phacoemulsification cataract surgery.

Contraindication: What are the special precautions to be followed?

Under following conditions, use of this medication is inadvisable. Its use should be withhold as it would cause harm to the patient
Dental anaesthesia. Hypovolaemia, heart block or other conduction disturbances.

Other Precaution to be observed while taking this medication

Especially after myocardial infarction. Hepatic or renal impairment, CHF and following cardiac surgery, bradycardia, resp depression, porphyria, elderly or debilitated patients. Pregnancy.

What are possible side effects of this medication ?

Infiltration anaesthesia. Dizziness, paraesthesia, drowsiness, confusion, resp depression and convulsions. Hypotension and bradycardia leading to cardiac arrest, anaphylaxis.
