Indication : Why is this medication prescribed?

Conventional insulin produced from beef or pork pancreas. Since 1970 improved purified insulins are available. i) Purified by gel filtration. ii) Purified by Ion exchange chromatography. iii) Highly purified or mono component (MC). Type I DM. Type II DM not controlled by oral drugs. Diabetic ketoacidosis (Diabetic coma). Hyperosmolar (nonketotic hyperglycaemic coma). During septecemia or surgical procedures.

Contraindication: What are the special precautions to be followed?

Under following conditions, use of this medication is inadvisable. Its use should be withhold as it would cause harm to the patient
Hypersensitivity. Hypoglycaemia and insulinoma.

Other Precaution to be observed while taking this medication

Renal impairment. Ischemic heart disease. Combination therapy. Insulin resistance.

What are possible side effects of this medication ?

Hypoglycaemia, development of antibodies to insulin, hypersensitivity, local Lipodystrophy, Oedema. Local reaction at injection site.
