Indication : Why is this medication prescribed?

Severe infections caused by susceptible gm negative organisms eg - Billary tract infections, Brucellosis, Cat scratch disease, Cystic fibrosis, endocarditis, endometritis, gastroenteritis, granuloma inguinale, listeriosis, meningitis, otitis externa, pelvic inflammatory disease, peritonitis, plaque, pneumonia, septicaemia, skin infections, UTI.

Contraindication: What are the special precautions to be followed?

Under following conditions, use of this medication is inadvisable. Its use should be withhold as it would cause harm to the patient
Uraemia, severe renal function impairment, pregnancy, neonates. Hypersensitivity. Pregnancy. Perforated ear drum.

Other Precaution to be observed while taking this medication

Dose of gentamicin must be precisely calculated according to body weight and level of renal function. If irritation persists, discontinue the treatment. Do not touch the dropper as it may contaminate the solution. Use within one month of opening the container. Do not use if fungal, viral, tuberculous or purulent conditions prevail. Perforated ear drum. Concurrent use of neuromuscular blocking agents, myasthenia gravis, parkinsonism, conditions predisposing to ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity. Lactation. Monitor auditory and renal functions.

What are possible side effects of this medication ?

Irreversible ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity, headache, rashes, thrombocytopenia and joint pain. Transient irritation.
