Fentanyl Citrate

Indication : Why is this medication prescribed?

Analgesia during short surgical procedures. Used as premedication. Also used during anaesthesia - induction, maintenance and in the immediate postoperative period. In combination with a neuroleptic for inducing neuroleptanalgesia.

Contraindication: What are the special precautions to be followed?

Under following conditions, use of this medication is inadvisable. Its use should be withhold as it would cause harm to the patient
Respiratory depression, obstructive airway disease, raised intracranial pressure, hypovolemia/hypotension, myasthenia gravis, concurrent use of MAOIs or within 2 weeks after stopping them hypersensitivity. Lactation.

Other Precaution to be observed while taking this medication

Head injury, reduced dose in debilitated patients, hepatic and renal impairment. Fentanyl citrate is incompatible with thiopentone sodium and methohexitone sodium.

What are possible side effects of this medication ?

Nausea, vomiting, bradycardia, hypotension, pruritus, respiratory depression. Reduction in pulmonary compliance, apnocea, laryngospasm and bronchoconstriction. Seizures. Urinary retention may occur after epidural administration of fentanyl.
