Indication : Why is this medication prescribed?

Postoperative respiratory depression. Acute respiratory failure.

Contraindication: What are the special precautions to be followed?

Under following conditions, use of this medication is inadvisable. Its use should be withhold as it would cause harm to the patient
Severe heart disease and hypertension, severe COPD, epilepsy, cerebral oedema, hyperthyroidism, ischemic heart disease, status asthmaticus, epilepsy, convulsive disorders, phaeochromcytoma, recent cerebrovascular accident. Contraindicated below the age of twelve.

Other Precaution to be observed while taking this medication

Heart diseases, hepatic or renal impairment. Monitor BP, pulse rate and deep tendon reflexes. Rapid infusion may result in haemolysis. Protect and maintain adequate airway.

What are possible side effects of this medication ?

Dyspnoea and other resp problems. Muscle involvement may range from fasciculations to spasticity or seizures. Headache, dizziness, confusion, hyperactivity, hyperpyrexia particularly in the genital or perineal regions. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, problems with urination. Alterations of BP and various arrhythmias. Thrombopholebitis following extravasation.
