Indication : Why is this medication prescribed?

Enteric fever (Typhoid and Para typhoid). H.Influenzae meningitis. Anaerobic infections, intraocular infections, urinary tract infections, conjunctivitis, external ear infections. Corneal ulcer, bacterial conjunctivitis, trachoma, ocular infections. Otitis externa, chronic otitis media. Pre and post antral or mastoid surgery.

Contraindication: What are the special precautions to be followed?

Under following conditions, use of this medication is inadvisable. Its use should be withhold as it would cause harm to the patient
Hypersensitivity, trivial infections or prophylaxis, concomitant use of penicillins. Large doses in neonates, bone marrow hypoplasia. Contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation.

Other Precaution to be observed while taking this medication

Never use in minor infections or those of undefined etiology. Avoid repeated courses. Concomitant use of anti coagulants, and convulsants, sulphonylurea. Hazard of aplastic anaemia is very unlikely but should be borne in mind while assessing the benefit expected from their use. Application should be discontinued if allergic reaction occurs.

What are possible side effects of this medication ?

GI upsets, optic and peripheral neurites, dry mouth, allergic skin reactions. Gray baby syndrome, supra infections. Bone marrow depression, aplastic anaemia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia or pancytopenia. Hypersensitivity reactions, irritation.
